Why the ‘Île de Beauté’ is perfect for honeymooners

Referred to as ‘Kalliste’, meaning ‘most beautiful’ by the Greeks, Corsica has always possessed an exclusive reputation, long having been the choice of the world’s rich and famous: Prince Rainer of Monaco brought his bride, Princess Grace, to Calvi for their honeymoon, as did Richard Burton when he married Elizabeth Taylor. The diversity of Corsica adds to its romantic appeal: stunning beaches and breathtaking mountainous scenery contrast perfectly with old-fashioned rural hamlets, the seaside, or more bustling, modern towns.

Corsican Places is the UK’s specialist tour operator to the island and offers many self-catering properties and hotels within its portfolio, which are perfect for honeymooners.

These include Apartment Carla, one of the Casa Cianfarani collection situated in the heart of Calvi’s Genoese Citadel. Located on the top floor of an exclusive historical building, this two-bedroom apartment offers magnificent views over Calvi Bay. A short walk down the cobbled streets leads one to Calvi Town, the harbour, and a pine-fringed crescent of silver sand beach.

Also in La Balagne (North West) region, Corsican Places is pleased to introduce Casa Acciani - a modern and stylish villa for two – perfectly located just 1.2km from Lumio’s Arinella Plage beach and only a short drive from Calvi. Views across the sea to the Revellata Peninsular can be enjoyed from the villa’s terrace and the property also includes its own small pool. This season, 7-nights at Casa Acciani starts from £859pp, based on two sharing and including return flights, taxes and car hire.

Moving North to the Cap Corse is Apartment des Peintres - decorated in a bohemian style and renovated to retain original features - a unique away from it all retreat in the unspoilt Erbalunga. Positioned directly on the sea, the two bedrooms and living room offer views out towards the distant Citadel in Bastia, 10kms away. A selection of restaurants is only a short walk away, as well as Erbalunga’s pebble beach and opportunity to bathe in the rocks on the headland.

Recommended hotel options include the 4* Hotel la Villa in Calvi. Built in the style of an extensive Roman villa perched high above Calvi, La Villa - set in seven acres of gardens and complete with four swimming pools - has been awarded membership of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group. In addition to a Michelin starred restaurant “I’Alivu” and beauty salon, hotel guests have the use of a reserved area on Calvi beach.

Hotels in the South include the 4* Hotel U Capu Biancu, near Bonifacio. As the name would suggest, the hotel is situated on a white limestone headland and affords spectacular views out across the Gulf of Santa Manza. Paths lead down from the hotel to virtually deserted beaches, and a variety of activities are within easy reach. The restaurant’s menu includes Corsican specialties. This season, 7-nights half-board at Hotel U Capu Biancu starts from £1564pp, based on two sharing and including return flights, taxes and car hire.
